friday five!
1. What's the last vivid dream that you remember having?
actually, last night i had a dream that involved... someone from my past (and i'll leave it at that). we were in a huge room with a bunch of beds and strange bathrooms made of glass.. (??)... it looked like an orphanage, but it was a dorm room. all of the beds had colorful, 80's cartoon character sheets and beadspreads on them. there were guys and girls there. at one point i looked out a window, and things were on fire, which scared me. i asked the person i was with if we could leave, and then i woke up.
2. Do you have any recurring dreams?
not lately, and it pisses me off. i've had a few great dreams, where i wake up in them morning and feel great, and i'd love to have them be recurring. the nightmare i had when i was little (see below) was a recurring dream... thank god that one stopped.
3. What's the scariest nightmare you've ever had?
i used to have a nightmare when i was little... i don't remember any details, but i remember that it scared me senseless. lucky i don't ahve it anymore.. i think if i did, it would still scare me.
4. Have you ever written your dreams down or considered it? Why or why not?
i wrote one of my dreams down once, only to re-discover it a number of years later. reading it, i was horribly embarrased that my subconcious could even come up with something so... bizarre. so, since the dreams that i remember are often bizarre and therefore slightly embarrasing, i don't ever write them down.
5. Have you ever had a lucid dream? What did you do in it?
i've never had a luicid dream... at least, not one that i've remembered when i woke up. i've been trying for years, though, and i read somewhere that if you try to have a lucid dream long enough, that you'll have one eventually. so i guess i'll keep trying.

the end...
well, that's it... the end of the x-files.
i'm kind of.... numb. that's really the only way i can describe it. i don't think the fact that i won't be curled up on my couch in 3 or 4 months watching the season opener has sunken in yet. it's one of those things, where you've been doing something for so long, you're not quite sure what you're going to do once it's over.
i started watching the x-files sometime towards the tail end of season two. i remember being in the youth room at church, looking at episode synopsis printouts that my friend vanessa had brought with her, and i think that had something to do with my initial interest in the show, although it's been so long now i really can't say how long it's been or how long i've actually been watching.
during high school, i remember staying home on friday nights to watch with my sister. i remember being on the edge of the couch, biting my nails during anasazi, the season two closer, wondering if mulder was really burning up in that underground train car. i remember screaming at what looked like a real cockroach crawling across my tv screen in war of the coprophages. i remember being scared shitless during home (which was so freaky that they only aired it on network tv once after that... on halloween 99, and i watched it then, too). i remember being thrilled when i found out my college roommate was also a huge fan of the show. i remember sitting in our dorm room, in the dark, watching every week, and the next year, sitting in the condo, watching every week. i saw the movie opening weekend. i hung the framed movie poster in my living room. i started buying the dvd box sets. and i kept watching every week.
plain and simple, the show sucked me in, and kept me riveted. it had everything. comedy, drama, suspense, romance, cool storylines and great acting. i'm re-watching the series, in order, and there are a few shows i missed the first time around, but even the ones i've seen several times keep me interested and intrigued.
i'm sad to see it go, but at the same time, relieved. although i enjoyed some of the stuff that was going on with dogget and reyes, mulder and scully were the x-files. their relationship held the show together, and without that, it just wasn't the same. still good, still interesting, but not the same.
the series ender was great. seeing mulder again was awesome. having everything wrapped up and explained was nice, too. the best part though, was the scene in the hotel room, which i recognized as almost identical to a scene from the pilot episode. my sister caught that it was reversed, and when i watched the pilot after the end of the finale (for closure, i guess), i noticed that the outside shot of the hotel room was identical. that was a nice touch, and a nice way to close the series.
overall, it was a damn good nine years of tv. i wish it could have been longer. i'm sure i'll be watching my dvd's often, and i can't wait for the movie(s), but i'm not quite sure what i'm going to do on sunday nights anymore.

blogger insider 2
well, a fix for my movabletype probem is in the works, and i'm also working on a new layout for when i return to the world of blogging... hopefully in the next week or so.
in the meantime, here are my answers for this round of blogger insider. I was paired up with Edward Champion of Dr. Mabuse's House of Fun. if you're interested, my questions and his answers can be found here.
1. what medium do you consider to be the world's central art form and why?
my friend harrison wanted me to say conversation, just to throw everyone for a loop, but i'll have to go with music. music is just one of those universal things that speak to people regardless of language barriers. cultural barrieres are a bit tougher to hurdle, but i think music, of all things, can do that.
2. if your cat had the ability to talk, what three questions do you think she would ask you? and how would you answer them?
the only question she'd probably ask is why we keep waking her up from her naps, and my answer would be that she's so cute i can't resist petting her. i'm sure that she'd like that answer (she likes it when people tell her she's cute) and then she'd go back to sleep. ;-)
3. you mentioned an undeveloped picture of camryn manheim somewhere in your room. what other pictures are on that roll and are you deliberately holding onto other rolls of film in this manner?
oh god, i think that film has halloween, the camryn manheim photo, and a few shots from my trip back east over new years. you know, i don't normally hang onto film that long, but i've been pretty broke lately, so i haven't had the 15 bucks lying around to get them developed.
4. since the acting world is incredibly competitive, what specific qualities do you believe you can add which will allow you to not only break through the barrier but offer a distinct voice?
well, i don't plan on doing acting as a profession simply because of the competitive nature... i'm not a very competitive person, and i'm perfectly happy doing community theater kind of stuff. i do acting and theater just because i love doing it. i do it for myself, not for anyone else. however, i'm planning on offering my 'distinct voice' through teaching... i'm planning on getting a masters in education and i'm going to teach high school theater. my dream is to help develop a good theater program at a school that may not have had one before.
5. describe the last politically related news that really angered or depressed you. and why?
well, the stuff going on in israel right now is very upsetting to me, mostly because it's really frustrating to see supposedly intelligent people being stubborn, stupid assholes. it doesn't help that we have family friends over there and my best friend want to go over there in two months.
6. okay, i'll fess up. i'm a joyce nut. why specifically did you hate "portrait of the artist as a young man"? will you ever give the book a second chance? did you hate it because it was difficult or too vivid? explain in reasonable terms why joyce (fer the love of all that is great about books, joyce!) stunk up the room!
well, it's been a long time since i've read the book, so i can't be too specific, but i just remember being bored of of my skin. i'm not sure if i'll ever read it again, but i may thumb through a copy so i can give you a better answer to this question someday.
7. what are your main influences in book choices? and how do you feel about the demise of the oprah book club?
lets see... in high school i started playing the dollar game... i'd scour the clearance racks and look for books that had neat titles, cool jackets and compelling summaries. i still do that, but clearance books are a bit more expensive than they used to be. now, i get great suggestions from friends, and i check out the besteller rack, the independent bookseller reccomendations and the employee recommendations at my local bookshop (a fantastic place, you should check it out if you're ever here in town.
as for the oprah book club, i am sad that it's ending not for my own sake, but for the sake of all the folks who started reading again because of it. i was rarely able to watch the book club episodes, but the first one i saw compelled me to buy a book that is now one of my favorites (the reader by Bernhard Schlink). Looking back at the list of books, I realize I've read quite a few of them... She's Come Undone, I Know This Much Is True, Where the Heart Is, The Reader, Drowning Ruth, and The Corrections. Fall on Your Knees is next on my list.
8. what was the last great holiday-oriented experience that you had and why? describe it.
i'll have to go with last 4th of july... my family and i were at the beach, and at dusk, the fireworks started... a few at first, but after about half an hour, they were hundreds of fireworks going off all down the beach. this went on for four hours (and i'm not even kidding). fireworks are illegal where i live, so it was a rather amazing sight. of course, we had to get in on the action... we had giant sparklers and some hard core, expensive fireworks imported from washington state. ;-)
9. if you could slide one of your five senses up into an almost superhuman level, which one would it be and why?
i think i'd have to pick sight. i've been nearsighted since i was 10, and my vision is really bad, and i really hate having to rely on glasses and/or contacts... it's like looking through a tunnel. i am eagerly awaiting they day when they have perfected laser eye surgery (and it will be totally covered by insurance by then, of course) and then i'll throw my glasses away forever!
10. you said that september 11 was the scariest thing that had happened to you. what was the second scariest thing?
well 9/11 really eclipsed almost everything because not too much has been really that scary, per se. i think the second scariest thing would have to be the gulf war. it was two days before my twelfth birthday and i remember vividly being very upset about it, because i had hoped that mine would be the first generation to see no u.s. involvements in any wars. i was an optimistic child. ;-)
11. what's your favorite shakespeare play and why?
i think i'd have to go with a midsummer night's dream, because it's funny as hell.
12. if you had to pick one, ibsen or strindberg?
that's easy. ibsen, without a doubt. a dolls house is one of my favorite plays... i wrote more than one paper on it during college. strindberg is a little weird for me, i think. they did a dream play at ucsc 2 years ago, i had to not only read the play, but see it as well. the design was fantastic, but i didn't really like the play itself, the acting or the actual text. it was really a sticky situation because the director was one of my ta's and i had to write a paper on it... i wanted to be truthful and tell her that i thought it was terrible, but like any good undergrad, i feared for my grade and turned in a nice, mild paper.

14. a train is traveling westward towards a crossroads at 10mph. a pickup truck is puttering along northwards at 7mph. there is no indication that this intersection between rail and road is a railroad crossing aside from an crumbling x sign that dates back to 1947, which can only be seen during the daytime. however, both respective vehicles travel at nighttime and there are no lights on the road. what happens to the truck and the train? and how do their respective speeds factor into the equation?
um, didn't you get the memo? theater geeks don't get up before 11 am, and they don't do math. however, there are some problems with this equation... you didn't mention if the truck was traveling towards the intersection, and you didn't specify the distance between the crossroads and the vehicles, so there is no way to tell if the vehicles will ever intersect or not. (i may not be good at math but i can pick a word problem apart like nobody's business.)

well, everone seems to be on hiatus, including me... although mine isn't self imposed. my host switched servers and now movabletype is broken and they are taking their sweet time getting back to me about the problem (i hope that means they're researching it, or something).

new phones, and other things
well, it's been a busy few days... i've been working a lot (that's good, i need money really bad). however, i have today off, which is great, because i still have about 10 thing on my to-do list that i need to cross off by the time i go back to work on tomorrow. my two main goals today are to finish my mix for burn, baby, burn! and get down to the post office to mail them off. the mix is almost done... i have to get about 4 more songs and then figure out the order. it's really diffferent from mixes i've made before, but in a neat way. i'm going to post the tracklist and cover art next week (to give the mixes time to make it through the mail... don't want to ruin the surprise!)
saturday was a long day, but i got to take a break between shifts to go meet up with imelda, marisa and ebin. we were all exchanging mixes, and it's nice to finally meet everyone! it was weird walking around town, wondering if one of them was in line behind me at longs or something. ;-) the mix imelda gave me is great... i especially like the live version of once in a lifetime by the talking heads. (the tracklist for the cd i made imelda can be found here.)
i got a new phone the other day! i've had my old one for over two years, so having a new, fancy phone is so exciting. i finally have text messaging, and now that it's finall working, i'm having fun with that.
i'm also cat sitting this week for skinny... my mom's going out of town, and skinny gets really lonely and stops eating when my mom's not around, so she made the trip over the hill to chill with me. right now she's sitting next to my desk, chowing down on stinky stinky cat food. it's good to have her here, though... i love cats and i've really missed having one around the house.
ooh, ooh, ooh! remember when i was saying that my friend danny was going to be in the new jewel video? well, apparently it's finished, and you can watch it here. he's the singing army guy in the very beginning. (here's a photo of us, i have flowers in my hair, danny's right behind me.)
ok, off to the post office!

i love furthurnet!
i've got to sing my praises of furthurnet, which is one of the coolest internet things i've found in quite a while. basically, it's a peer to peer, gnutella-like program that offers live, legal music to download. since last night i've downloaded 6 complete shows - 2 bisco shows, 2 john mayer shows, 1 vida blue show and one sc hemp allstars show. in less than 24 hours. so so cool. i'm not quite sure how this cool little program has floated by under my radar for so long, but now that i have it.... i'll probably need to buy more cdr's. or a bigger hard drive. ;-)
of course, i'm going to reccomend that folks use it to check out some live john mayer, which is awesome (he gives a killer live show!). but it's also cool because i can check out new bands, and it's way cheaper than a concert ticket.
i lost interest in trading for a little while there, becasuse mailing blanks out was such a pain, but now that i can download shows with little to no effort, i'm more likely to check out new artists. so a questions to all my phunky, live-music-loving friends... who should i download this week? i need some new grooves!!

this is my first go at blogger insider, and i got paired up with dyanna of throughyoureyes.com. Here are her questions and my responses:
1. hi! first of all, why strawberry shortcake, aside from the fact that she's cute and her line of toys smelled so yummie?
well, sometime last fall i bought a cute sweatshirt with strawberry shortcake on it, and it had the little tagline "life is delicious". i thought that was really cool and profound, and that had a lot to do with my decision to do the design.
2. did you ever choose some cds to get with your free cd vouchers? tell us which they are if you did!

3. you love phish. how were you introduced to them, and why do you like them so much?
my first introduction to phish was in high school, when my best friend donna was singing 'catapult' (from the picture of nectar cd) over and over and over and over. for my birthday, she got me the hoist cd, and it was all over! i saw them that summer at shoreline (7-31-97), which was an amazing experience. i'm not sure i can explain why i like them so much, but let me say this - listening to phish makes me happy, and seeing them live gives me a feeling of complete and utter joy.
4. you're a "must see tv" fan. i love the new show, leap of faith. what do you think about it?
i'm not quite sure about that one yet. i think it's got some really funny moments but the whole premise is really overdone. you know, the whole 'friends dealing with work and sex in manhattan' thing. it's not that i don't enjoy shows like that, hell, friends and will and grace are two of my favorite shows, but i think its been done so often that the show needs to be really really funny to get off the ground. laep of faith has potential, but i think it will probably go where all the other 8:30 shows have gone....
5. you listed a bunch of your favorites, but you didn't name a favorite book. if you're like me, you have more than one favorite, so tell us which your three favorite books are.
oh god, this is a hard one! let's see... the bridge across forever by richard bach, the handmaid's tale by margaret atwood and siddhartha by herman hesse.
6. say you're abducted by aliens and they allow you to take with you three non-living items of any size. what do you take and why?

i don't write mean or inflammatory things about people i know, and i try not to write anything i wouldn't want my family to read, since they do read my weblog. ;-) just kidding, mom! no, really, i keep in mind that regardless of the fact that it's my journal, it's still in the public domain, and anyone who really wants to could find it, connect it to me, and read it. i love keeping my weblog, but i watch what i say because i don't want it to come back and bite me in the ass.
9. when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
i wanted to be a broadway superstar, or a pop singer.
10. are you superstitious? if you are, what are some of the superstitions you have/do? of not, why aren't you?
i'm not really superstitious, per se, but there is one superstition i observe because i'd get my ass kicked if i didn't... you aren't allowed to say the word macbeth inside a theater, except within the context of the actual play. it's supposed to be bad luck, people are supposed to die or get injured or something. i don't believe it, but i observe it anyway.
11. have you met any online friends out in the "real" world? if so, were these positive experiences?
i've met quite a few of my online friends in real life, thanks to the phunky bitches, and they've all been awesome. and this last new years eve, i flew out to philadelphia to meet ericalynn, who was my secret bitch (like secret santa) two years ago. after exchanging emails, we realized that we had an awful lot in common. the week i spent with her (seeing the dsico biscuits) was great. so, i guess my answer is yes, and yes.
12. what's your take on finding love online?
love is found in unexpected places, including on the internet. i think it's definitely something that can happen. i don't think it's something that i'd really explore as an option for myself in the near future, though.

when i lived in orange county, i used to love going to disneyland to study. now i'd have to say my room. it's my haven... computer, tv, bed, stereo... that or i go down to west cliff drive, where i walk and take photos and people watch.

3. you love phish. how were you introduced to them, and why do you like them so much?
my first introduction to phish was in high school, when my best friend donna was singing 'catapult' (from the picture of nectar cd) over and over and over and over. for my birthday, she got me the hoist cd, and it was all over! i saw them that summer at shoreline (7-31-97), which was an amazing experience. i'm not sure i can explain why i like them so much, but let me say this - listening to phish makes me happy, and seeing them live gives me a feeling of complete and utter joy.
4. you're a "must see tv" fan. i love the new show, leap of faith. what do you think about it?
i'm not quite sure about that one yet. i think it's got some really funny moments but the whole premise is really overdone. you know, the whole 'friends dealing with work and sex in manhattan' thing. it's not that i don't enjoy shows like that, hell, friends and will and grace are two of my favorite shows, but i think its been done so often that the show needs to be really really funny to get off the ground. laep of faith has potential, but i think it will probably go where all the other 8:30 shows have gone....

ok, so the john mayer show was awesome and amazing, and i had a great time!
when we arrived at the fillmore, there was already a pretty long line, but we ran into some people and hopped into line with them. i had never been to the fillmore before, so when we got in, i was totally amazed.. it's a beautiful venue! we grabbed seats on the leather couches on the right side of the venue, pretty close to the front. the crowd was about 85% women, and i'd say the majority of them were under 20. all there probably to ogle over john. ;-) that's not to say that i wasn't ogling over him as well, but i was there mostly for the music. really, i was!!
the opener, norah jones, came on about 9:10 and played for about 40 minutes. she was good, i'll give her that, and i really liked the first song she did, but plain and simple, it was way too mellow. i was seriously falling asleep by the end of her set, which, in my opinion, it the exact opposite effect you want an opener to have. (then again, i tend to dislike opening acts in general, but that's because i'm spoiled!) john came out and played a song with her, and all the teenage girls screamed like they were at an *nsync concert. it was funny.
john, of course, was fabulous. he played the two songs i wanted to her (3x5 and love song for no one ). he was really high energy, and played for about two hours straight. it was awesome! i was dancing my butt off, although no once else was. that was odd, it was great dancing music and no one was dancing! he did a few short jams, all of which were really good. he was making funny 'trey faces'!!
my only real compliant is the fact that so many people come to shows and talk through the whole fucking thing. listen, people, if you're going to talk during the show, stay home and listen to the cd and give those of us who are there to listen to the music room to dance!
overall, the show rocked my socks off, and i will definitely go see him again the next time he's up here in norcal. ;-)

john mayer!!!
i am going to see john mayer today. i am so excited i can hardly stand it. seriously, since buying his cd on a fluke, i've fallen totally in love with his music, and to be seeing him live (and at the the fillmore, no less) is so so cool.
and did i mention that he's hot?? i'm going to try and get my camera in to the show... i'll try to take some photos and post them tomorrow.

easter... phew!
bombings, police standoffs, car accidents and war.... happy easter, everyone.
i am not happy about the stuff going on in israel right now. we have family friends who live there, and my best friend was planning on going there for school next year. d, like i said... not allowed! although if things keep going the way they are i doubt they'll even be having classes. plus, on top of the bombings and all that shit, there were, like 2 police standoffs in norcal today, and a fourth-grader at my dad's school died in a car accident. bummer, dude
anyway, easter. my day was remarkably similar to last year... up at 5 am to get ready for sunrise service, breakfast at church, nap, and dinner in santa cruz. i didn't eat any easter candy... the only sweets i had were a few chocolate covered cahsews from marini's. mmm. although i do think i'm going to have to break down and buy a cadbury egg before they dissapear until next year. those things are so damn good... it's a good thing they aren't around all the time!
i saw my friend grant at church today... and i haven't seen him in a long time, so that was nice. since he's been away at college he's been getting into jamband music, which is great because it means i'll have another show buddy this summer!!
tomorrow me and my sister are going to see lord of the rings, becasue she hasn't seen it yet. i'm looking forward to seeing it again... and in the theater, no less! i didn't even know it was still playing. i guess if i'm going to be sitting through a three hour movie, i should get some sleep. ;-)

1. If you could eat dinner with and "get to know" one famous person (living or dead), who would you choose? this is so funny, since he isn't really 'famous' yet, but i'd have to choose john mayer. from what i can tell, we have a few things in common (we both love jeff buckley, for one), and i'd really love to pick his brain about stuff other than music. plus, he's hot. ;-)
2. Has the death of a famous person ever had an effect on you? you know, i'm never really that emotionally impacted when celebrities die... i remember being surprised when princess diana died, though.
3. If you could BE a famous person for 24 hours, who would you choose? i'd be myself...
4. Do people ever tell you that you look like someone famous? not really.
5. I was going through my archives and found an old post on colorgenics. in the name of science (well, not really, but you know what i mean) i decided to try it again. this time, instead of lingering on my choices, i just clicked as fast as a could, on a whim. i didn't get the same results as last time, but these are also very accurate. amazing!!

i *heart* the osbournes
i swear to god, the osbournes is my new favorite show!! i nearly choked on my popcorn, i was laughing so hard. maybe it's the prolific use of the word wanker, which is possibly one of the funniest words ever, especially when said in an english accent.
on another note, i am broke. i'm still looking for a "real" job, but i'm not having much luck. i still have my campus job, and i've got a lot of hours right now, but i only get paid monthly, which makes things really difficult. for example - once all my checks clear, i will have 3 dollars. which means, until i get paid in 2 weeks, i can't spend any money. none . i did, however, find out that there is a used clothing store downtown that buys stuff and pays you on the spot... so i'm going to dig through my closet and my shoe boxes and drag some stuff down there. if i'm lucky i'll make enough for some groceries. ;-)

trey
so, the other day i got my hands on about 5 tracks from the new trey anastasio cd that comes out next month.
yeah, yeah, i know... i shouldn't download unreleased albums off the net, blah blah blah... i say screw it. i want to hear the new stuff and i fully intend to buy the album when it comes out, so whatever.
so anyway... after hearing these songs, i'm really looking forward to this cd! these are great, concise, well done studio tracks with a lot of energy and focus. i think, if you enjoyed seeing (or hearing) any of the summer 2001 trey shows, you'll probably like the album (of course, i can only speak for 5 tracks, but you know what i mean).
although, hearing new trey material only makes me think of phish and how much i miss them.
