friday five

friday five!

1. Have you ever had braces? Any other teeth trauma? no, thank god, i was lucky and my teeth grew in straight. my dentist wanted me to get braces to fix the gap between my front teeth, but i flatly refused. i figured, if madonna could pull it off, so could i!

2. Ever broken any bones? oh dear lord, here we go... i broke my leg when i was three, then in third/fourth grades i did wrist, other wrist, and back to the first wrist again. sophomore year of high school i broke my right ankle really badly, had surgery and all. that one was the worst. (yes, yes, i am a klutz.)

3. Ever had stitches? other than on the aforementioned ankle, i dont' think so.

4. What are the stories behind some of your [physical] scars? let's see... i have a scar under my lip from when i was 1 or two... my baby sister was in one of those bouncy swing chairs and kicked me in the face. one on my knee from when i was seven or so... i was running around my grama's backyard and fell on the exposed corner of a brick. there is, of course, a scar on either side of my right ankle, but i went over that one already. by far my favorite, though, is a small scar right below my right wrist. a couple of months ago, i was trying to open a jar of jam, and gouged myself with my own thumbnail. ;-)

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? i'm going to see the student dance show tomorrow night, and then i'm driving to san luis obisbo to visit my friend autumn. yay!

candidacy!

ooh, i didn't have rehearsal this afternoon so now i have some time to kill! prepare for disconnected, random drivel!!

my pal ericalynn has a new, pretty design and is back blogging with a vengeance. also, i got linked by the lovely jennifer of missing letters. hooray for new links, and old links re-invented!

so, i got season four for christmas. i wanted to go through all the seasons in order as i got them, but i fell really behind, so lately i've been watching a lot of vintage x-files. man, those first few seasons were so great... some of the banter beteween mulder and scully is absolutely brilliant. i just started season three, and i jsut watched one of my favorite all-time episodes... d.p.o., the one about the kid who can control lightning, or as donna called it, the mrs. kiveat episode. i knew it had giovanni ribisi, but imagine my surprise when all of a sudden i see jack black! it was pretty cool... i love jack black (it's all about the d, baby) so i'm always glad to see him in... well.. anything. i think his performance on snl was great.

i just started reading i'm not stiller by max frisch. it was a birthday gift from yan, who had nothing but praise for it... and so far i'd have to agree. i've only read about 30 pages but so far i'm totally interested in this story. plus i'm always excited to read new authors, since i'm exhausting all my current favorites... i think i've read everything margaret atwood has ever written. ;-)

something exciting i forgot to mention... last week i submitted my 'announcement of candidacy' form. this sounds uneventful, but what it means is that i'll be getting my diploma! yup, i'm officially graduating!! it's very exciting. i never thought i'd be so excited about turning in a form. ;-)

ok, time for work.

adventures in phila.

ok, so here are my disjointed thoughts and ramblings that i scribbled into my palm during my trip, plus bits of info here and there that i'm adding. ;-)

but first i want to thank my wonderful friend ericalynn, her roommate jill and little yellow guy for being great hosts and making me feel at home. you guys rock.

12.27.01
so, i've decided that i hate airports. they just freak me out and transform me into a big bundle of nerves, and i'm always really tense.

12.28.01
after sleeping in, we all piled into the car and set off for worchester, ma. it took less time to get there than it takes to get to l.a., but we went through 5 states - pa, nj, ny, ct and ma. we drove on the new jersey turnpike, which all in all was really not too exciting, but it always makes me think of being john malkovich. we drove over the hudson rivier on the tappan zee bridge, and in the distance, i saw what could have been the nyc skyline although i would't have recognized ti anyway, having never seen it.in ct, i saw it snow for the first time, which was really exciting

12.29.01
ROSELAND. i could just leave it at that, but i'll explain.

12.30.01

12.31.01

01.01.02

01.02.02
ugh, yet another dreaded trip to the airport! i actually got up at a decent hour, and me and jas headed into center city for an early lunch with ericalynn. i arrived at the airport around 12:30 only to discover that my flight had been cancelled! apparently, there was a huge blizzard in atlanta, wchich is where i was supposed to be going. at that point, i was very relieved that i hand't gone to the airport early to try to fly standby, like i had on my way out - i probably would have been stuck in atlanta! i begged the lady at the delta counter to get me back to cali that day, so, she got me on to a flight to salt lake city, which didn't leave until 6pm. so, with about 5 hours to kill, i bought a widow for one year by john irving

SNOW!

no, this isn't a photo of me up in tahoe or in the mountians... it's a picture of me next to the theater/music parking lot at ucsc.

at first it was hail, but then it turned into snow, and nearly the whole campus was all white and crunchy. it lasted long enough for me to go home and get my camera and drive back up to campus... i took a few photos... you can see them here.

it almost never snows in this part of california, so the snow today surprised a lot of people, including me. the funniest thing about this is that while i was back east, i saw it snow, but it didn't even compare to this. strange!!

i am sam.

so, i went to see i am sam today. it was a great movie... interesting story, innovative filming, amazing acting. seriously, go see this movie jsut to see sean penn... his performance is truly remarkable.

but if you do see this movie, take a box of kleenex. not a little packet, a box. i cried through the whole movie, on and off. it wasn't sad per se... just really touching and emotional. i think i might have enjoyed it more if i hadn't been bawling... plus i got sick right at the end, so i'm not really sure how they resolved everything. i mean, i saw the cute scene at the end, but what happened with the lawyer and the custody battle and all that? really, i'm so annoyed. if you saw the movie, e-mail me and let me know how the damn movie ended!!

damn you, baskin-robbins.

so, tonight i'm having a massive craving for a chocolate blast from baskin-robbins, so i decide to bite the bullet and drive to capitola to get one. i show up at 9:40, a full 20 minutes before they're supposed to close, and the punk-ass behind the counter says that he won't make me a blast because they've already cleaned everything, so they were doing scoops only.

WHAT THE FUCK?

ok, kiddies, i work retail and i know exactly what was going on there. if you are working a closing shift, you are always scheduled until 15-30 minutes after closing time to clean stuff up. these morons decided that it was slow and they wanted to leave at 10:05 instead of at 10:30. so they cleaned up everything so they could take off early.

well, they picked the wrong night to do this, because i really wanted that chocolate blast and now i'm pissed. as far as i'm concerned, if you're open until 10, somone can walk in at 9:59 and order something and if your doors aren't locked, you've got to give it to them. i'm pretty damn sure that it isn't store policy to stop serving everything but scoops at 9:30, and if for some strange reason it is, why the hell don't they tell you that when you call to see how late they're open?? i'm also pretty sure that the guys that were working tonight will get in big trouble when i call the store manager tomorrow and complain in a big way. they'd better give me free ice cream, too, dammit.

i mean, really, how hard is it to re-wash a fucking blender, anyway?

moral: don't fuck with a girl when she's having a chocolate craving or you will live to regret it.

friday five

friday five!

1. What cologne or perfume do you wear? i don't really wear perfume, but for special occasions i wear amythest from victoria's secret (which has been discontinued... bummer.)

2. What cologne or perfume do you like best on the opposite sex? calvin klein eternity, if they still make it. mmmm, makes my toes curl.

3. What one smell can you not stomach? peanut butter. blech.

4. What smell do you like that others might consider weird? i love new car smell. i guess this is not so weird, but my family sure thinks it is.

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? you know, i have no idea! wow, this is a first.

cd's

ok, so here's the deal - i have some free cd vouchers from bmg, and i can't decide what to get. so i'm letting you decide for me. what's the album (or two or three) that i really should have? nothing too obscure, this is bmg we're talking about. leave a comment, and in a little bit i'll post what i order. ;-)

(good suggestions so far... but keep them coming!)

lotr

so, i finally saw the lord of the rings.... hot damn, what a great movie. seriously, i was not bored for even one second. i can't read tolkien (i don't like his style of writing) but his stories always intrigued me, so i'm jsut excited that i finally will know what's in those damn books!! of course, you never know, i may read them after all... i'm dying to know what they left out of the movie. ;-)

i also saw orange county. when i told people i wanted to see it, they all responded with distaste... but my answer was always, "well... i lived there." this of course, is why i had to see the movie... i lived in orange county! for two years!! and i, like the main character, had an overwhelming urge to just GET OUT.
the movie was ok... it was a funny caricature of the people in orange county. although, there are a few people living down there that are just like the people in the movie. no fooling.

on a completely different note, loveline is super cool.

end of an era

yes, i am sad about the end of the x-files, simply because it's become an institution in my life... i mean, the show started when i was a freshman in highschool and i've been watching it religiously for years (hell, i'm even shelling out the $$ to have the series on dvd).

on the other hand, it really is about time the show ends. it's not nearly as good without mulder, and not just because i think he's dead sexy! mulder really was the focal point of the show, and without him... well, it's just not as good.

so, all in all, i'm glad chris carter is giving himself time to tie up loose ends and really make the end of the series good. i'll be looking forward to the movie, though!!

friday five

friday five! (look, on time for once!)

1. What do you have your browser start page set to? my own homepage (i like to see if i have new comments).

2. What are your favorite news sites? cnn, but most of all i love nextdraft, the best newsletter ever!!

3. Favorite search engine? yahoo, baby, yahoo!

4. When did you first get online? my senior year of high school (that's 1997)... back when my parents refused to get the internet and i had to dial up through the public library to get my e-mail and i surfed the web with a text browser. ahhhh - times have changed.

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? catching up on reading, and moving furniture so our new housemate can move in!

yummy food.

thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes... i had a great day!! i got to go to see all my church friends at the planning meeting for our youth choir (which went very well, i might add) and then debbie and john took me out to dinner at this great place called the e&o trading company. it was wonderful... we had these great corn fritters, naan (which is some sort of flatbread), lettuce cups, these little egg roll things, chicken with peanut sauce and these absolutely amazing mushrooms that were by far the highlight of the evening. it was great. plus, debbie got me one of those cool spin-brush toothbrushes, and it's a mermaid!! fun!

today was good too, becasue me and jean and angela went to a west african dance class! it was really really fun, but we all got worn out before it was over. we were so bummed about that fact that we deceided to be gym buddies and set up times to go to the gym together three days a week. this is great because i like the gym but i just can't go by myself, so having other people around to motivate me will help a lot. plus jean knows all about weight lifting so she can teach me some - i really want to work on my arms.

after the dance class, me and jean ordered out sushi... it was wonderful, but now i'm in a semi food coma, not to mention worn out from the dance class, so i think i'm going to go crawl into bed. mmmmm, bed.

birthday!

happy birthday to me.....

isn't there some sort of rule somewhere that you don't have to go to school on your birthday? man, i wish there was becasue i really didn't want to get out of bed this morning. plus it's cold today!!

bowling last night was a blast! they turned on atomic bowling before we were done, and jean brought a cake and the guys who worked there came over and sang to me! it was fun. the only scary thing was that there was a pikachu on my cake and under the black lights his eyes were glowing. it was slightly freaky.

i'm excited about the common ground meeting tonight, too... i can't wait to talk about my ideas for the dramas. i just hope that i get there early enough to get ice cream with alex (happy birthday to you too, darlin!).

LYG!!

so, imagine my surprise when i checked my voice mail today and there was a message from the right coast little yellow guy! i was very happy, beacsue i miss him and my other new friends on the right coast. hi guys!

tonight a whole bunch of people are going bowling for my birthday. i'm excited to get out of the house, because the last few days have been occupied with measuring and moving furniture becasue we're getting a new housemate! i'm giving up my office and my friend jean is moving in! it's going to be really fun... i love moving furniture!! plus it will be nice to have another person around the house. ;-)

friday five

firday five!! (seriously, what is with me doing this at the last minute every damn week??)

1. What was your first job? i worked as the senior high youth assistant for my church. i got to help design the monthy newsletter, and fold, staple and label all 400 of them (and this was before it was all automated!!)

2. How old were you when you had your first kiss? i was 14. we were at the ice rink. it was as wonderful as i had imagined it would be, but it guess it was kinda obnoxious to be making out in the middle of the ice rink. ;-)

3. What was your first car? What happened to it? my first car was a 1995 turquoise ford that i still have. soon it will be going to my sister and i'll get to start driving my new car!!

4. What was your first concert? i'm ashamed to say that my first concert was a new kids concert - although the only reason i was there is because my sister couldn't find anyone to take the other pair of tickets, so it was me, my sister my mom and my grama. it was awful. my first phish concert was 7-31-97. i feel like i need to include that becasue it was the first one i ever went to without a parent, and it was a major life-changing experience. ;-)

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? job hunting, sleeping and catching up on e-mails.

x-files... drool

delayed reaction - last night's x-files was amazing. seriously. i've learned my lesson regarding spoilers, so i won't go into detail, but i thought it was great.

so, i just got the crap scared out of me... all of a sudden there's a noise in my hallway and i see people coming towards me...
it's jean and my friend samara, who i haven't seen in months and months! i was so excited! me and samara did prom last june, and we like to go out and do all kinds of fun girlie things. i actully owe her sushi, so i get to go up to napa someday soon. ;-)

Thursday, January 3, 2002

home again home again

well, i'm back in cali. phew! this past week was absolutely insane... i wrote a little every day, but it needs a little filling out, and that is not happening tonight! SO - coming this weekend, my tales of adventure and disco biscuits tour on the east coast, with your guide, little yelow guy.

he's little, he's yellow, and he's a guy!! i *heart* little yellow guy!

ok, enough with the inside jokes. i'm going to bed.

oh - welcome back, laura!!
